June 10th, 2010

Most of us take our garage for granted. The first thing you need to do is understand what type of garage door you will actually need. So a 16′ x 7′ insulated steel door will cost you a little over $1,000. If you live in a area that experiences moderate weather, a basic metal (aluminum or steel) or wood roll up garage door with no insulation will do the job. A durable version will cost you between $500 – $800.

More than likely you will get a roll up garage door and you will can customize it to your liking. You can add things like windows or paint the garage so that it blends in with the overall architecture of your home. A lot of manufacturers will charge little to nothing to have those customizations done for you, so you do not have to worry about going outside of your budget.

Once you find a door you like in the $600 price range (you know it is going to be durable, comes with a great warranty, and fits your styles), it times to start thinking about installation. Most manufacturers do not include installation in the price of the garage door, so you will have to pay extra to have it done. However, if you are handy and are a patient person, you should be able to put it together in a day or two with the help of a friend.
