Cultural Factors Influencing Menopause

March 18th, 2010

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when she hasn’t had a period for a year. Although menopause can be a difficult transition for some women, it is a natural part of the aging process and with the right mind set it can be a rewarding time. For one thing, it marks the end of periods and I’m sure most women would agree that this is a great thing. It also marks the end of fertility. Some women find the loss of fertility a hard pill to swallow while other women embrace this change reveling in their new found freedom. A great deal of menopause has to do with perception and attitude. This is not to say that menopause isn’t without it’s challenges because it is a difficult time, but if you are able to view it in a more positive light, you will have a much easier time.

Some things affecting the signs of menopause are beyond our control such as culture, racial makeup and genetic factors, but studies have shown that certain attitudes, perceptions and life style choices which are within our control can affect how we transition through menopause. It’s really not so surprising that women that come from cultures where aging elevates a person to a position of respect and prominence in the community experience fewer menopause symptoms and have less psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Although depression and anxiety are not experienced by all menopausal women in the U.S., they are frequently reported as common menopause symptoms.

Some studies have been done on the effects of culture and race, but clearly more still need to be done. How empowering would it be to be able to embrace menopause as the natural transition it is rather than be overcome with despair over the loss of youth?

The Amazing Health Benefits of Vegetable Juicer Recipes

March 8th, 2010

Vegetable juicer recipes are the most nutritious of drinks. Vegetables are loaded with antioxidants like carotenoids, vitamins C and E and chlorophyll. Green colored vegetables are also a good source of other nutrients like vitamin K and dark leafy greens also contain small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. So daily vegetable juicing recipes can go a long way to promoting overall health and protecting us from many diseases.

Beta-carotene is a antioxidant of the carotenoid family that is found abundantly in carrots, kale and spinach. Beta-carotene helps to protect the eyes from oxidative damage that can lead to eye diseases and premature aging of the eyes. Beta-carotene is also transformed in the liver to vitamin A , an antioxidant that is an important part of a healthy immune system. Vitamin A also protects skin cells from free radicals that are found in polluted air and smoke.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two other carotenoids that are found abundantly in the leafy greens spinach and kale. These two carotenoids are found in most eye support supplements in the market. Research has shown that lutein and zeaxanthin both act as antioxidants within the lens of the eyes and that an adequate dietary intake helps to prevent macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts from developing.

Green colored vegetables are always a good source of chlorophyll because it is the plant pigment that puts the green hue in plants. Chlorophyll helps cleanse the blood and also helps build red blood cells and improve the overall quality of our blood. Chlorophyll also has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Making green juice recipes also ensures we are getting enough vitamin k in our diet. One cup of most green vegetables supply nine times the daily recommended amount of vitamin K. Vitamin K is a blood coagulant that ensure that cuts and wounds get sealed up to limit blood loss and promote healing. Vitamin K is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that can help with arthritis and asthma.

Dark leafy greens are also a good source of vitamin E. Just like vitamin A, vitamin E is also an essential nutrient for the immune system and working together they are even more effective. Vitamin E also protects the skin from the damaging effects of sunlight upon the skin. Vitamin E intake is therefore associated with healthier skin and a lower incidence of skin cancer.

Four Easy Steps to Rid of Eczema

March 5th, 2010

Eczema can strike at anyone and at any age. Eczema in children is very common nowadays and as a matter of fact, studies have shown that 1 out of 10 children in the whole world suffer from eczema. Some children simply grow out of this skin disorder; however, some are unfortunate enough and continue to be plagued by eczema up until adulthood. So, if you are seeing tiny red spots on your kids, then it is highly advised that you go check with your family doctor and have your child examined.

Children, ages five and below, typically have eczema of the eyelids and rashes seen on their cheeks and forehead. The appearance of these rashes can be very uncomfortable for your child since it is accompanied by severe itching. This is one reason why eczema on children must be cured early on to avoid further discomfort. Although there are topical ointments and creams readily available over the counter, it is still wise for you to use the natural approach to rid of your child eczema since over the counter remedies are known to have certain side effects. Children, ages five and above will have flare ups visible on their knees, ankles, elbows and wrists which are usually brought about by the clothes they wear and other substances found in the atmosphere and the environment. However, there are things that you can do to ultimately rid your child of this condition. Here is how to treat eczema in children.

1.) Replace your child’s clothing with fabrics made from cotton. Cotton is soft and natural and it will allow your child’s skin to cool down and breathe freely.

2.) Tell your child never to scratch the rashes and tell him or her what will happen if they continue scratching it.

3.) Use a gentle soap and shampoo when bathing your child.

4.) Proper moisturizing of your child’s skin should be done regularly since it will reduce the itchiness and dryness of their skin.

Stepping Vs. Running

March 4th, 2010

Many people have argued over the years about what is a more effective workout method; running or “stepping”. I would like to weigh in on the topic with no particular scientific knowledge to speak of, just plain old knowledge.

For me, getting on the treadmill to run is my most dreaded weekly activity. I cannot handle putting one foot in front of the other on a machine that is simulating an exercise that in my opinion should be done outside to view the scenery. Although from a weight loss perspective running can work very well in terms of calorie burn, although it must be noted that many people with poor knee and hip health may suffer from running as a result of repeat pounding on the joints which can cause further problems if not taken care of.

Take stepping for instance, especially on the new air climber which is specially formulated to allow you to step on air. This is a great alternative for those who may be experiencing pain in the knees and hips, as it provides much more support and much less pounding. In terms of doing it inside, its more or less the same concept as the treadmill except for the fact that for me personally its just more fun. Nothing is fun about running, but you can at least make climbing fun.

At the end of the day it does not matter if your using the air climber as seen on TV or any other exercise device for that matter. The whole game behind loosing weight and staying fit is working hard, eating right, and staying persistent through the long haul. If you are able to stick with it for at least three months their is no reason why you cannot see results that you can truly be happy about.

Using a Detox Center to Kick Cocaine

February 20th, 2010

Do you really need a treatment center to get off of cocaine?  Well yes and no.  Let’s take a look at the facts for moment.

First of all, you never really need medical supervision for cocaine detox, as it is completely safe from a medical standpoint to simply stop using cocaine cold turkey.  This is not true of many drugs and you still may be very tired and fatigued when you quit cocaine, but there is no danger in terms of the withdrawal.  So as far as detox goes, you can just stop.  It is safe.

Now if there are other drugs involved, including possibly alcohol, then this may not be the case.  Quitting alcohol can be dangerous.  Coming off of pills of different types can be dangerous.  So if the person is abusing more than just cocaine, then they might, in fact, need a detox center of some sort.

Now the other side of the coin is that going to a drug rehab can still be of huge benefit to anyone who is struggling with cocaine addiction.  The reason for this is because this is a lifestyle drug, and the addict needs to learn a new way to live that does not involve them self medicating all the time with cocaine.  Residential treatment can help them with this, exposing them to group therapy, meetings, groups, lectures, and so on.  Anyone who goes through the residential process should be able to learn some things about how to live a clean and sober life.  And they meetings that they expose you to in rehab can serve as the foundation for recovery when you leave rehab.

So is rehab necessary for cocaine withdrawal?  Not really.  But it can still help a great deal in terms of the therapy and help that you can receive there.  So keep an open mind to the idea and consider the trip to rehab in order to help yourself with your addiction.

How to Get that Super High Jump

February 8th, 2010

So, you are a ball player that is working out all day and night, practicing like a lunatic, but still you cannot jump high like your favorite basketball superstars and you desperately wonder what is it that you are actually doing wrong? Well, the answer to that is plain and simple. For sure you are using all the wrong jump workouts – period!

With that said, you need to mend your ways and start practicing plyometrics for vertical leap. So, what is this kind of workout all about? Continue reading and find out.

Plyometric exercises will increase your vertical jump because these exercise routines will help produce more of those fast twitch muscles in your entire body. Your body has slow twitch muscles as well as fast twitch muscle fibers and you can develop any of these two as you workout and exercise. For example, marathon runners need to develop their slow twitch muscles because they need these muscle fibers so they could out last their opponents. Simply put, slow twitch muscles are made exactly for endurance. Then again, as a basketball player, endurance is the last aspect that you will want to acquire. What you need are muscles that have the ability to respond quickly and can provide you with that explosive power whenever you make a jump.

By training with the use plyos, you can develop more of those fast twitch muscles and in effect, you will obtain that high and forceful vertical leap. One great plyometric exercise that will help you accomplish just that is the double box jumps. With this, you will need two elevated platforms of the same height. Simply stand on top of the first box, step off it then jump up onto the second box. You need to perform the “step off – jump back on” part as fast as possible. This particular routine will develop the reflexes of your legs and knees.

What Is a Hemorrhoid and What Causes It?

January 30th, 2010

A hemorrhoid is quite simply a strained vein. When too much stress or pressure is put on the veins in the anal or canal or directly at the anal opening, they can bulge out causing a small bump. In the case of external hemorrhoids, sometimes this bump can actually be seen or felt. What tends to happen to a lot of hemorrhoid sufferers is that once the vein becomes stressed and bulged out, it is now more likely to become irritated and painful.

With internal hemorrhoids, the passing of hard stools further inflames the condition but most people with internal hemorrhoids don’t suffer painful symptoms, usually the only symptom is blood on stools or in the toilet bowl after using the bathroom. This doesn’t mean that just because you’re not in pain you should ignore the problem because internal hemorrhoids if left untreated can become prolapsed or strangulated hemorrhoids which are more serious. When an internal hemorrhoid gets pushed out the anal opening, this is referred to as prolapsed and then when the prolapsed hemorrhoid then becomes stuck outside the anal canal, this is a strangulated hemorrhoid. Also, it is important to note that any anal bleeding should be discussed with your doctor to rule out cancer or other more serious problems.

People with external hemorrhoids are much more likely to feel all the symptoms associated with hemorrhoids such as itching, pain, and discomfort. This is because the small bulging vein is now rubbing against clothes, being sat on, and subjected to a lot of daily irritation so it makes sense that this would be much more painful.

Some of the most common causes of hemorrhoids are diet, obesity, anal sex, pregnancy, genetic factors, and aging. It doesn’t really matter what causes your hemorrhoids, what is important is to discuss the problem with your doctor so that you can start on a hemroid treatment plan immediately to avoid further complications.
